Soliciting Opinions

It's been forever since I've done a decorating post. I guess that's what happens when your house gets to a certain level of completion. Of course, my house in nowhere near complete but most of our remaining projects are bigger budget so most of them are sitting on the back burner.

Anyway, for the last 18 months I've been trying to decide how to decorate the tops of my cabinets. I've been tempted to not add anything but it always bugged me so I've finally taken the plunge and have been working on it for the last couple weeks. It has been a challenge since I don't have a lot of space between the cabs and my ceiling.

I'm not sure I'm in love with how it looks so that is where I am soliciting opinions. Here are a few closeups:
{This is on the top of one of my stand alone cabinets and I actually like this little trio}

{ignore the empty Tupperware container that my little rooster is propped up on. I promise you can't see it from the floor!}

The big picture:

So... what do you think? I've thought about leaving the two higher spots completely empty but I don't really like how it looks. Also, I'm not a big fan of faux greenery {ducking for cover, don't hate me ok?!?} so I don't want to throw a bunch of greenery up there. Long skinny signs? Long baskets? Nothing?

As usual, the paint color is off but you get the general idea. I also added the pictures so they are clickable. Lay it on me, I can handle it!

O.K., I'll give a shot (using my decorating sense that pales to yours)...I really like your rooster theme pieces especially. I think it would be fun to have just your unique rooster stuff up there. Granted, I'm sure it would take a while to find stuff you love to complete all the surfaces. But, hey, if people know your collecting roosters, I'm sure you'd start having others contribute to you collection! I have no suggestions for for the tall cabinets. Sorry! You really are an awesome decorator Monique!! (And funny side note on the faux greenery...I've only done the faux ficus tree. When we moved, Greg suggested it stay in the new basement. I had no idea! ;)

At Razmataz they sell interesting scrolling things... like plaques. They have short ones that would you nail right to the wall in those short spaces you have... that would be interesting texture and dimension.

Oh... that totally sounded like I know what I'm talking about. I'm simply mimicking the words of my decorator mom and friends.

I love your kitchen!! Very nice!!!

I think what you have done so far looks great!!!! I like the urns, but think they look odd w/o something on the taller cabinets next to them. But I honestly have no idea what you could put there.

Thank goodness I have barely 7' tall celings and don't have to worry about such things at the moment!

I like the idea of long skinny signs on the taller cabinets! I think all your stuff is so cute! :o)

Ok...was about to suggest greenery, until I got to the bottom! LOL Probably cause that's what laces the tops of my cabinets! It's good we all have different taste, otherwise life would be boring!;)

Hmmm . . I love that your cabinets are different heights (that's the style now). Mine are all one height and borrrrinnggg. But, given that the differing heights add interest in themselves, I think too much other stuff up there looks busy. Have you considered long tins of wheatgrass (the kind that's like 3 inches high or so inside a long wooden/tin planter? That would add some color up there and emphasize the beauty of what's already there vs. fighting with it. I've also seen people/decorators paint just that area above the cabinets a different color than the rest of the walls (you'd just be painting that one wall, corner to corner without making the turn) and then adding decorations of a single color (white looks great) to really make them pop. Good luck!

as much as I love all your stuff, and it feels like a true collection, you might want to think about mixing it up a bit with some different textures. you've done well with color and height, but everything feels a little to similar in finish, texture, and dimension. Does that make sense? You could try something wooden, or possibly a basket of some sort. if you want to stay away from faux greenery, you could do some cute garland instead.

you need more greenery. even if you just put greenery on the higher ones that would help. but remember....I don't decorate so ask Kar :)

That is such a tricky area to accessorize. When we built our house I had our kitchen ceiling dropped, so I wouldn't have to worry about decorating above my cabinets. I did lower one section of cabinets, so I have one little nook to decorate... anyway, this is about YOU not ME. lol!

I love what you have done so far. I think you could quit and be fine. Some open space doesn't seem like a problem to me. If you really want something, I would consider a long wooden bowl with textured balls, or maybe something with that fake green grass, for a bit of color. (a nice compromise for greenery - I hate the green vine stuff too - ugh) It's fabulous, really!

gosh, really... the more I look at your photos, the more inclined I am to say that I would just leave it as is. You've got the rule of 3's going, a visual triangle, and the rooster above your fridge lends balance. I think if you had anything on that cabinet above the rooster, it would actually look too crowded. One final thought - if it is really bugging you, consider hanging something long and thin on the wall, instead of on top of the cabinets. Maybe some scrolly iron, a wall word - in two parts, or something else long and thin?

:)

Super cute roosters! My cabinets are still nakey!

Here's my two cents: faux greenery = never. Faux grass, however, I like. I would be inclined to say leave the taller two empty, or maybe long vinyl lettering boards and/or baskets. Good luck!

I think this is a tricky spot to decorate too.... I'm such a wimp, I had transom windows put above my kitchen cupboards so I wouldn't have to do anything!!

Everything looks great... You've got some awesome pieces!

I say leave the two taller empty. Other than that, no idea.

I have been thinking about this for a couple of days now. I like what you have done thus far but I feel that the red urn/vases look lonely. I think you do need something on the higher cabinets but not sure what. I agree on the greenery. Or we can talk about this when I'm actually there in three weeks! And counting!!! It's snowing right now!
