You can never have too much STORAGE!!!

Being the organization freak that I am, I find that I never have enough storage. The Master Bedroom closet in our house is huge - about the same size as the bedroom we used for the nursery in our home in CT - but the space was poorly allocated. So Al and I decided to reconfigure the entire closet and add some much needed storage. That's what we've been working on for the last couple weeks. We are also in the process of really bulking up our food storage and we desperately need some place to put it all. The garage is out because of the high temps we reach during the summer and we don't have a basement. We finished painting all the shelving a few nights ago and I've spent the afternoon unpacking boxes and putting everything away (there's that nesting instinct going again). So here are some after shots. The top two shelves are deep and tall enough to hold huge plastic storage tubs or 5 gallon buckets of food storage. From the floor to the bottom shelf is high enough for 5 gallon buckets as well.
Where the shelving is now used to have one hanging rack on 2 of the 3 walls. The top shelf goes all the way around the closet. And we still have plenty of shelving to grow into.
This wall used to have one hanging rack so we moved it up and added another shelf for all of our shirts and my skirts (and yes, I ROYGBIV my clothes according to season)

The opposite wall is slightly longer than this and holds all of our pants and my dresses. We also have a large crawl space under the stairs in our closet where we will put the bulk of the food storage.

I've also mentioned that Al and I have never been able to store all of our clothes in one place before due to older homes and small closets. This little exercise has also taught me that not having ample storage and access to things probably makes you overbuy. I am dying over how many pair of shoes I own. Three plus shelves worth makes me think I really DON'T need any more shoes for awhile!!

I had to grin at all your shoes, then I scrolled down and read your comment about them. :-) The closet looks absolutely GREAT and I am totally jealous! Living in a 1965-era tract home, our closet space is deplorable!

You are going to be so happy with this storage organization solution. I ROYGBIV my clothes AND shoes too! You totally make me feel not so OCD. And, if it makes You feel any better...I think I have just as many if not more shoes. Just remember the rule! If it's been more than two seasons since you wore them -- get rid of them! Then you won't feel guilty for buying new ones!

Love, love, love it!!! Who doesn't organize their clothes by color and l/s, s/s??? I'm dreaming of a home with a closet that big!!! Maybe, someday, but probably not in the near future!

wow, i couldn't believe how many heels you have! I think I have maybe one pair, but that's due to my clumsiness, I tend to roll over my ankles even when I'm flat footed :). (i had to look up on an acronym finder what ROYGBIV and OCD mean :))

My freshman year at BYU, someone commented that I always seemed to be wearing different shoes, so I counted them: 42 pairs. Since then I have pared them back a bit, but it's always nice to have the right pair of shoes for the right outfit!

Unfortunately this picture is taken AFTER the shoe purge. I think I got rid of 12 pair to the DI box. Plus this doesn't show my basket that I keep just for flip flops (10ish pair for me) or the 5 or 6 pair in the basket by our front door. Truly scary. I should count and report back.

That is GREAT storage. I so agree that you can never have too much. You do have a ton of shoes! Would you believe I only have maybe 8 pairs? Nevemind that my daughter has about 40, LOL. Your house is looking fabulous...and I love all the nesting! almost time :0)!

I am thoroughly impressed -- 1) by the fact that you are so darn productive at 8 months pregnant and 2) by the number of shoes you own! :)

Hey Q, where'd you get the shelves? We're facing a similar problem (food storage and too much hanging space/not enough "putting" space)
