After Hurricane Katrina hit NO a few years ago, and watching the horrors there unfold, Al and I decided to get serious about our 72 hour kit. This weekend we are rotating the contents out of it (we do this every 6 months at general conference time). So I thought I'd list what we have in our kit for anyone who is working to put theirs together.
Non Food items:
First Aid Kit - include children's/infant pain reliever and any prescription meds you take
Extra contacts/solution/case or eyeglasses
Hand sanitizer
tooth brushes and paste
Sunscreen
Bug Spray
Diapers - disposables and cloth with pins and plastic pants
Wipes - 2 packs - 1 for diaper changes one for everything else
Chapstick
Poncho for every member of family
Space blanket for every member of family
Hand warmers
Radio and extra batteries
Flashlight and extra batteries
Feminine hygiene supplies
Trash bags
Ziploc bags
foil
plates/cups/plastic ware
Clorox wipes
hand soap (do NOT include bar soap as it will stink up your kit and make all the food taste like soap - we speak from experience)
Calling card/change/cell phone charger
Cash in small bills (we think we need about $200 to cover most needs)
Can opener
Small pot
leatherman tool
Plastic tarp
zip drive with important documents scanned and saved onto it
Scriptures
Paper/pen/crayons
Card games
Food Items:
Baked beans
Tuna
Beef Jerky
Granola bars
Trail mix
Crackers
Ramen noodles
Hot chocolate/cider packets
Hard Candy
Gum
Juice Boxes
Water
Salt & Pepper
We have all of this is stored in a large plastic tote on wheels. Double check to make sure your container will fit in your car (also speaking from experience). This works better for us than backpacks since our kids are too little to carry their own stuff. We also have a large tote with our camping supplies including sleeping bags, our coleman stove, another flashlight, tent and fuel for the stove that we could grab and put in our car. Our kit doesn't include everything but would probably get us by in most emergencies.
It was an eye opening experience to be without power for 3 days last year while we lived in Seattle. We got a great idea about how well we were or weren't prepared and how much we depend on power. None of the gas stations could even operate without power. There were no working ATM machines. Grocery stores could not operate. It was a good trial run for us!
Hope this helps someone!

Well, it does make me feel a little inadequate, but I think that it might inspire me too. Too bad you don’t have it as a PDF so that I could print it out easily. :)
Did you read my mind? I have had this "feeling" like we need to have all our food storage taken care of and get a 72 hr kit together...
Thanks for the reminder that we all have to "be prepared"!
You are incredible. Thank you so much for posting this. We really need to work on our prepardness. Our electricity went out for eight hours and I thought we were going to go under. Thank you for inspiring us.
I intended to always update our kits at conference, but well, that lasted for a year and then we missed last October! Thank you for the reminder!! Also, thank you for the idea about the tote on wheels. Duh...our backpacks aren't the most convenient for our family dynamic! I definately need to add some more things to ours. Great ideas like cloth diapers, bug spray, kid meds, and no bar soap.
And now, I must say I am totally impressed with you! Not just the kits, but that you are so on the ball with 3 little kids including an infant!
I feel so secure knowing we have good 72 hour kits. We are working on getting wheat stored right now. We just filled a bunch of buckets with wheat & brown rice. Love having a full storage room. Thanks for the list, I'll have to compare it to what we have.
I've heard that duct tape is another good thing to have. Flash lights too.
I'm not as organized as you so I think we'll probably end up buying our kits. A friend of mine started a business doing that sort of thing and they look pretty neat.
hey-- that looks like my list! (give or take a few). we just went through ours too and i was surprised how much we had raided it this year and at the things I needed to restock.
we also keep the list taped to the top of the bin so we can easily take an inventory. also, the our list reminds us of what to grab should we have to evacuate quickly!
What about the diet coke? I'm not surviving any crisis without that ;-)
Jan - funny you should say that. My BIL says to just stock pile a year supply of Diet Coke and trade it for foood and supplies to all the addicts. I would have a hard time living without my daily DC :)
That's a great list! I'll have to print that out!! Thanks! :o)
it helps me A TON. I am so overwhelmed by things like this and my anti-pack rat nature has a hard time compiling anything, yk? But this gives me a starting point at least. So thank you! :0)
Thank you for inspiring me to do better in this area. We are so ill-prepared. I need to do better with this.
Thanks for sending this out! WE do ours at conference time - but only once a year. It's nice to see someone else's list and get ideas.
