We've been reading the book for the last few days and then we made some "hugs" for each other that the kids will have in their bags in case they ever feel sad or miss home. I laminated their hugs and attached them to their bags (no worries, Carter' s is on the inside of his bag so as to not take away from the toughness of his Batman backpack).Here's Makenna's attached to her backpack. It says, "1 hug for Makenna".
The kids also made hugs for me and Allen that we can refer to when we are sad and missing them. It's not a big thing but I hope they will remember they are loved and missed when they are away from me. A couple other books that we've enjoyed in prep for school this year:

You are so creative with the hugs! I like how I'm getting ideas from you with your first kid entering school. I probably did lots of that cute stuff with Morgan but it's a blurr since she is now going into 7th grade! Can you believe that!
Is there no end to your cleverness? You'd win the gold if your ideas were an Olympic Sport!
Hope tomorrow goes well and that your heart is not too empty. Just wait until he goes to college or on a mission! This is just preparation for the MTC!

What grades are your kids in? Is Carter starting Kindergarten or 1st grade? I have a couple years yet, so good thing I can refer back to your blog then so I don't forget all these great ideas!
Avery's kindie teacher did a lot with the kissing hand. It was all really cute stuff, and Avery ate it up. Cute ideas, and as always, love books, love books, love books.
We love the kissing hand book here too. Such a great book to read before starting school.
Gracie's kindergarten teacher did a whole week on the kissing hand. I loved it. We now own the book and I can't wait to use it w/ Ella. Such cute pics!
